Why Do Puppies Cry at Night?
Everything is new to your pup. They’ve gone from being surrounded by littermates and their mother to a completely different environment. Here are the most common reasons they might be feeling uneasy:

Separation Anxiety: Your puppy is a social creature. Being left alone in the dark can feel scary. For the first few nights, keeping their bed near yours can provide the comfort they need.

Need to Toilet: Puppies have very small bladders! If they’re waking up after a few hours of sleep, they likely just need a quick bathroom break.

New Environment: Strange shadows, quiet rooms, or new smells can be overwhelming. A calm bedtime routine and a dim nightlight can work wonders.

Pent-up Energy: If your pup hasn’t had enough playtime during the day, they might struggle to settle down. A light evening walk or gentle play can help them burn off that last bit of energy.
What You Should (And Shouldn't) Do

Stay Calm: Never shout or punish your puppy for crying; it only adds to their stress.

Avoid "Quick Fixes": Try not to give treats or pick them up every single time they whine, as this can accidentally teach them that crying gets them attention.

Create a Den: Use a cozy crate or a comfortable dog bed with a familiar toy or soft blanket. If introduced positively during the day, your puppy will start to see their crate as a safe, secure "den."
How Long Does This Last?
For most puppies, the first 3–7 nights are the hardest. You should see a significant improvement within two weeks, and by the end of a month, most pups are sleeping peacefully through the night. Consistency is your best friend here!
When Should You Consult a Vet?
While crying is usually normal, keep an eye out for signs of illness like lethargy, loss of appetite, or crying that suddenly starts after they’ve been sleeping well for weeks. If the crying persists for more than 2–3 weeks, it's always a good idea to check in with your vet.
Remember, this phase is just temporary. With a bit of patience and a steady routine, your puppy will soon feel right at home.
